Getting Started

Welcome to TurboMail

TurboMail is a desktop email workspace with local AI, source-linked email search, and multi-account support.

Traditional email clients treat your inbox like a static list. Typical "AI wrappers" just give you a floating chat box. TurboMail bridges the gap by building the AI directly into the email client, allowing it to index your emails locally, summarize threads, and draft replies using either on-device models or your own cloud keys.

Note: TurboMail is currently in public beta. Features and UI are subject to change based on community feedback.

Why TurboMail?

  • Privacy First: Run the built-in Turbo AI 1.5B model completely locally. No data leaves your machine unless you explicitly connect a cloud provider.
  • Source-Linked Answers: When you ask TurboMail a question, it cites the exact emails it used to generate the answer.
  • Multiple Accounts: Connect Gmail, Outlook, and IMAP accounts in one unified view.

Core Features

Local vs Cloud AI

Choose where your data is processed.

Local Mode (Default)

By default, TurboMail uses Turbo AI 1.5B, a lightweight model that runs directly on your CPU/GPU. In this mode:

  • Zero data leaves your machine for AI processing.
  • Works entirely offline.
  • Fastest for simple summaries and searches.

Cloud Mode (Bring Your Own Key)

If you need deeper reasoning or better drafting capabilities, you can plug in an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google.

  1. Go to Settings > Models.
  2. Select your provider.
  3. Paste your API key.
  4. Toggle the model in the top navigation bar of the main app.
Core Features

Composing Emails

Draft and send emails from any of your connected accounts.

When composing an email, TurboMail provides a multi-account selector so you never accidentally send a work email from your personal account.

AI Drafts

Click the AI Assist button in the composer to have TurboMail write a draft for you. You can provide a brief instruction like:

"Politely decline the invitation and suggest meeting next Tuesday instead."

The AI will generate the text which you can then edit before sending.

Core Features

Calendar Integration

Manage your schedule alongside your emails.

Turbo Calendar

When you connect a Google or Outlook account, TurboMail can automatically sync your calendar events. You can view your upcoming schedule in the Calendar tab on the left rail.

Turbo Link

Turbo Link is a built-in scheduling feature. You can generate a link to share with others, allowing them to book time on your calendar based on your availability rules, without needing a third-party service.

Advanced

AI Agents

Automate repetitive email tasks using custom AI agents.

Agents are background workers that scan incoming emails and perform actions based on rules you define.

Example Agents

  • Invoice Watcher: Automatically tags emails containing invoices and marks them as "Finance".
  • Reply Assistant: Drafts proposed replies to common customer support questions and places them in a "Needs Review" queue.

Creating an Agent

Go to the Agents tab and click New Agent. Define the trigger (e.g., "When an email arrives from @acme.com") and the action (e.g., "Draft a reply saying we received it").

Advanced

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Cmd/Ctrl + 3: Go to Agents

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TurboMail free?

During the public beta, TurboMail is free to use. We plan to introduce a paid tier for advanced features (like hosted cloud models) in the future, but the local-first core app will remain accessible.

Where is my email data stored?

Your emails are stored securely on your local hard drive in an encrypted database. TurboMail does not harvest your inbox or send your emails to our servers.

Does the local AI slow down my computer?

Turbo AI 1.5B is highly optimized and designed to run quietly in the background. It only utilizes heavy compute when actively indexing new batches of emails or answering a search query.

Troubleshooting

Emails are not syncing

If your inbox stops syncing, try the following:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts and check if the account requires re-authentication.
  2. Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
  3. Restart the TurboMail application.

Local AI is very slow

If answers take more than 10-15 seconds to generate:

  • Check if you have other heavy applications running (like video editors or games).
  • Ensure your device is plugged in (some laptops throttle performance on battery).
