How TurboMail works

Everything from first install to the deeper tools. Five minutes of reading covers it all.

Install and update

macOS: open the downloaded .dmg, drag TurboMail into Applications, and launch it. The app is notarized by Apple, so it opens without warnings.

Windows: run the .exe installer. If SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway. We are not code-signed on Windows yet, and the updater verifies every update by hash.

Updates download in the background and install when you restart the app. You can check manually anytime: open the gear menu in the top right and choose Check for updates. A banner shows download progress, then offers a one-click restart.

Connect accounts

Gmail and Outlook connect through Google's and Microsoft's own sign-in pages. TurboMail never sees your password; it receives a token you can revoke from your Google or Microsoft account at any time.

Any other provider connects over IMAP and SMTP. You'll need your provider's server addresses and an app password if they require one. Credentials are stored encrypted, on your device only.

You can connect several accounts and see them together or one at a time. Compose always shows which account you're sending from.

Choose your AI

On first run, TurboMail downloads a local model. The default is a fast 1 GB model that handles search, summaries, ranking, and drafts on your machine. Larger local models are available on the Models page if your hardware can carry them.

Cloud is optional. Add your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google API key and TurboMail can use that provider instead. Requests go straight from your machine to the provider you chose. You can switch between local and cloud at any time, and the app always shows which model is active.

Ask AI

Click Ask AI above your inbox and ask a plain-English question: "what are my upcoming flights?", "which invoices are unpaid?", "did the landlord reply about the deposit?" TurboMail searches across your mail and answers with numbered sources; click one to open the exact email behind it.

With an email open, the panel on the right scopes Ask AI to that message. One click summarizes it, drafts a reply, pulls out dates and to-dos, or explains it in plain language. You can hide this panel with the collapse button and bring it back from the edge tab.

Turbo Agents

Agents draft replies automatically for the kinds of email you answer the same way every time. You define what an agent handles; it prepares drafts and queues them for review. Nothing is ever sent without your approval.

Inbox tools

Your data

Your email is cached in the app on your device, and the local model processes it there. Email content never reaches our servers. In cloud mode, the request you make goes directly to the provider whose key you added. We measure anonymous install and active-user counts to understand whether the beta is working; details are in the privacy policy.

Attachments are not stored locally until you open them, so ten connected accounts typically use about 1 or 2 GB including the AI model.
